The Things They Carried, a novel written by Tim O’Brien, is a set of short stories about the soldiers’ experiences fighting in the Vietnam War. He reflects and tells his experiences about the war. Stories far from pride, triumphs or combats, show O’Brien’s feelings and experiences of friendship, loss and love and how they affected them after the war. People tell stories so they can understand each other in a better way, to share experiences, this is a way to keep the memories that might have faded alive. Storytelling becomes an interpretation of memoir and catharsis. Stories involve both data and emotions and this is part of his amazing narrative strategy. He uses repetition as one of his narrative strategies and he also uses a particular style as the author and another Tim O’Brien as a fictional character. He test readers to believe or not believe different situations in his stories, this strategy brings a tension between what is true and what is n ot true and he also writes stories about the past to understand it better.
